Tennishu

Tennishu (Marcus James Tenney) is a saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, producer, and composer whose creative voice moves fluidly across genres with intention and depth. Though not originally born in Richmond, he grew up in the city and developed his musical identity through its freelance musician community and the VCU-connected music scene, where he performed, studied, and built the foundation for his artistic versatility. Those experiences shaped a sound that brings together jazz sophistication, contemporary production, and narrative-driven expression across multiple mediums.

In 2017, Tennishu joined the acclaimed band Butcher Brown, becoming a defining force in the group’s evolution. His work as a saxophonist, trumpeter, and MC has contributed to Butcher Brown’s rise from Richmond roots to national and international stages, including NPR Tiny Desk performances, festival appearances, and a growing catalog of genre-blending releases. On the band’s 2025 album Letters From The Atlantic, Tennishu delivers a standout performance on “Ibiza,” where his sleek, memorable saxophone line shapes the identity and momentum of the track.

As a solo artist, Tennishu has built a striking and diverse catalog. His 2024 album More To The Story marked a pivotal moment — a fully self-produced, deeply personal project that showcased his range as a composer, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist. He expanded this vision with More Of The Story (2025), weaving together textured horn arrangements, evocative writing, and bold production choices. The instrumental piece “FireWater,” from More To The Story, stands as one of his most emotional and refined saxophone performances, revealing his ability to communicate with clarity and feeling through the horn alone.

Earlier releases such as Forward EP, Thirty EP, and Chant For Peace further demonstrate Tennishu’s commitment to growth, experimentation, and high-level musicianship. Whether performing live, crafting full-length records, or collaborating across genres, he approaches each project with focus, curiosity, and a deep respect for the craft.

Beyond his recorded work, Tennishu remains connected to Richmond’s music community while expanding his national profile through touring, collaborations, and emerging partnerships — including his developing relationship with Cannonball Saxophones. His trajectory reflects an artist continually widening his scope, refining his voice, and pushing the boundaries of what his instruments and storytelling can convey.

Across all facets of his artistry, Tennishu stands as a modern, multidimensional musician whose work bridges tradition and innovation. His horn serves as a centerpiece — expressive, narrative, and unmistakably his own. As he continues to evolve creatively, Tennishu’s music reflects both the journey that shaped him and the new chapters still unfolding: a sound defined by clarity, growth, and an uncompromising commitment to the art itself.
