Helen Miller
American songwriter and producer who started out in the late 1940s writing with fellow female songwriter (most lyricist/poet) [a=Fay Whitman] (later [a=Fay Manus]). After high school, Miller and Whitman had written more than a dozen songs, and after rattling around publishers' anterooms for a year, their break came when George Goodwin heard some of their songs at a party. He helped them get their songs to the right people and they quickly found success. The Doodle Songs was their first bought song in 1946.
Miller left the business to raise her kids and in the early 1960s when she met Don Kirshner. She joined and became the oldest of the group of Aldon songwriters. She had hits with [a=Howard Greenfield] and with lyricist [a=Roger Atkins]. Helen had a passion for R&B. She made it to Broadway in 1971 with "Inner City" with her R&B-influenced score with lyrics by poet [a=Eve Merriam].
Co-writer (with Whitman) of "Am I Asking Too Much" by Dinah Washintgon, which hit #1 on the U.S. R&B charts in 1948. With Greenfield, she had "Foolish Little Girl" by The Shirelles, which hit #9 R&B in the U.S., #4 overall and #38 in the U.K. in 1963. She had an additional 26 songs that she wrote or co-wrote that made the charts.
