James

James is an indie / alternative rock group from the UK.

James was formed in Manchester in 1982 by founding members [a=Jim Glennie], [a=Tim Booth], [a=Larry Gott], and [a=Gavan Whelan]. The group was signed one year later to [a=Anthony H. Wilson]'s infamous [l=Factory] record label, but only a few years later were snapped up by the major label [l=Sire Records Company]. James's early 1980s folk / indie sound would garner them impressive underground status before they would become big chart toppers from the mid-to-late 1980s. The 1989 single "Sit Down," issued by the seminal indie record label [l=Rough Trade], reached #2 in the UK singles charts and, in 1991, was followed by the #2 album "Seven." The group continued to find success with the 1993 album "Laid," its simultaneously-recorded nocturnal sister, 1994's "Wah Wah," and 1997's "Whiplash" (released in 1997 just after the UK's mid-90s Britpop explosion). The band released two additional albums before initially splitting up in 2001. James reunited in 2007 and remains active as of 2024.
