Fuller played many instruments but also sang and wrote his own songs. The instruments he played are the guitar, harmonica, kazoo and the fotdella, which is a foot-operated string bass instrument of Fuller's own creation and construction which he played with his right foot. The music he played ranged from old work songs, hymns and spirituals to blues, ragtime and pop tunes.

Jesse Fuller influenced many musicians including [a=The Grateful Dead], [a=Don Partridge], [a=Peter, Paul & Mary] and most famously [a=Bob Dylan], who adopted the use of a harmonica brace from Fuller.
