Joseph McCarthy, Jr. was educated at Julliard. He charted three times as a songwriter in the U.S. between 1948-1956. "Rambling Rose" by Perry Como hit #18 in 1948 and hit #27 by Gordon MacRae that same year (song co-written by [a2660725]). In 1957, "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life" by Nat King Cole hit #57 (co-written by [a276433]). Another song he is known for is "Why Try To Change Me Now" (Frank Sinatra, 1952).

McCarthy also wrote songs for Broadway revues such as John Murray Anderson's [i]Almanac[/i] (1953).
