Founding member of the Directors' Guild Of Great Britain. He was knighted in the New Year's Honours for 2002/2003. In 2005 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University Of Sunderland.

Music underpinned many of the movies he directed, from his debut Bugsy Malone (1976) to Fame (1980), [m564525] (1982), The Commitments (1991) and Evita (1996).
