Theresa Lindsey

U.S. soul singer a.k.a. Terry Lindsey, born May 23, 1944, in Romulus, Michigan. Died July 10, 2019.

Not to be confused with U.S. soul singer [a=Thelma Lindsey].

Passing an audition at Motown in the early 60s, her mother put the brakes to that .. saying Theresa had to finish school first. Born on May 23rd, 1944 and raised in a strict religious family .. she graduated in 1963, and went looking for a place to record. Not wanting to go back to Motown, she would be turned down at Golden World for being too young, but managed to get into Correc-Tone Records in Detroit. Getting a hold of a song called “Gotta Find a Way”, co-written by Popcorn Wylie .. the song became a huge local hit. with the session financed by Golden World owner Ed Wingate. Once she was old enough to sign a deal, he would later recruit Van McCoy to work with Lindsey on her next song, “It’s Love” .. but the song fizzled. Doing a few gigs at the 20 Grand, she would run into George Clinton at Golden World, who gave her the song “I’ll Bet You” .. based on a phrase often used by Martha Jean “The Queen” on the radio. Working with Mike Terry and Dennis Coffey on the song, later covered by Funkadelic .. the hits would eventually dry up and her career was pretty much done.
