Freedom Singers

Freedom Singers is an American vocal group from Albany, Georgia, founded in 1962 by [a=Cordell Reagon], a field secretary of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

The original line-up consisted of Reagon (bass vocals), [a=Bernice Johnson Reagon] (alto vocals), [a=Rutha Harris] (soprano vocals) and [a=Charles Neblett] (tenor vocals).

The group was disbanded after a tour and recording an album in 1963, though it has been reformed since. Currently the group performs once a month at the Albany Civil Rights Institute, led by one of the original members, [a=Rutha Harris]. In February 2010, the group performed in the White House in an event organized in honor of Black History Month. In addition to Harris, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Charles Neblett and [a=Toshi Reagon] joined the group for the performance.
